The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

Hello there! We are Year 6. We are in Mrs. Batley's class now but last year we were Year 5 kids in Mr. Poulter's class. We went on a fantastic journey to see "The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" courtesy of Time Travel Tours Ltd. Yes, we got into their time machine (we had to travel this way as the wonders are all gone now except for the pyramids) and set the dials for the correct time and place and before we knew it we were walking around long gone masterpieces of architecture. We sent back postcards from all seven destinations. Click on any of these seven locations on the map below to find out what we saw. This year's Year 5 kids may find it particularly useful! So, get exploring and discover....................

The Seven Wonders of the World

GREETINGS FROM BABYLON
Dear Year 5,
Here I am at the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in the year 600 BC, the year the Gardens were built. Someone told me that they were built by Nebuchadnezzar who is the King of Babylon. All the gardens rise as a series of terraces. They are built in the form of a pyramid and every terrace is planted with trees and flowers. They hide the framework of the building so that they appear to be hanging in mid-air. They are so beautiful, it's a shame that they are going to be destroyed and no one in modern times will be able to see them in full bloom.

Lots of Love,
Laura Clarke

GREETINGS FROM GIZA
Dear Year 5,
Hi everyone! Yes, I'm at the Pyramids Of Giza in 2508BC. They were built by the Ancient Egyptians to keep dead kings in because they believed in life after death. The Pyramids are shaped as they are because the body of the occupant is meant to go up, up and away to heaven! These things are huge, especially the Great Pyramid which is 135 metres high and covers an area of 5 acres. This was built by the pharoah Khufu and it has a golden tip, as have the others. The pyramids are the only surviving wonder of the world but they have been much eroded over the years. However, thanks to Time Travel Tours Ltd. I can see them in all their former glory and marvel at them.

See Ya!

GREETINGS FROM ALEXANDRIA
Dear Year 5,
Hello! I have just stepped out of the time machine at Alexandria in 280 BC when the Pharos of Alexandria was in its full glory. I met a nice person called Coren. The Pharos is a lighthouse and he is the lighthouse keeper and he told me all the secrets of the Pharos and the work that went into it. He told me that the lighthouse was built for Emperor Alexander so his ships can get safely into the harbour. The lighthouse can be seen 30 miles out to sea (48 kilometres). The Pharos is a whopping 410 feet (124 metres) tall. It took a long time to make (19 years). I really hadn't the heart to tell him the Pharos would be destroyed in 1385AD.

Lots of Love,

GREETINGS FROM HALICARNASSUS
Dear Year 5,
I have just arrived at the brand new Tomb of Mausolus at Halicarnussus in the 4th century BC. It was built for Mausolus, a ruler of Caria in Asia Minor, who unfortunately died recently. It is said that his devoted wife, Artemisia, had this fine building made. As you can see, the tomb is very elaborate, it is made out of marble and stands a whopping forty metres high. It has a rectangular basement resting on a colonade of thirty six columns. A stepped pyramid rests on the colonade with a statue of Mausolus in his chariot on top. Two of the best architects in the whole of Greece designed it and it has been decorated by the finest artists of the day. It's a pity it is going to be destroyed by an earthquake in the 15th century. Oh well, at least the word "mausoleum" still survives today!

Lots of Love,
Kent Bridgett

GREETINGS FROM RHODES
Dear Year 5,
Hi, I’m here in Rhodes after a great trip back in time in a time machine. I am standing right in front (and this is amazing) of the gigantic, incredible Colossus of Rhodes. The year is 281BC and this amazing wonder has only just been built. It is 105 feet high and made from bronze. The bronze to build this statue came from melted down bronze weapons of war. It was made in the figure of the Greek god Helios, the sun god. The statue is standing at the side of the harbour and not astride it as so many pictures show! It’s a pity you can’t see this today, the Colossus fell in an earthquake in 224BC. I’d better not tell anyone that, it might upset them!

Lots of Love,
Daniel Hall

GREETINGS FROM OLYMPIA
Dear Year 5,
I've just landed at Olympia, Greece in 435 B.C. to visit the Statue of Zeus. The statue is made of gold and ivory and it is an amazing 40 feet tall. His eyes are made of precious stones. Pheidias, the sculptor who made the statue, must be very proud, well, I know he is because he told me so himself! Zeus is seated in a huge chair and the statue reaches the roof of the temple where it is placed. Zeus is the king of all the gods and the ancient Olympic Games were dedicated him. Unluckily, I've come when there is a thunder storm. Zeus must have sent it (after all, he is also the god of weather) to show his approval.

Bye for now!

GREETINGS FROM EPHESUS
Dear Year 5,
Here I am in the year 550BC standing in front of the largest and most complicated temple built in ancient times, the Temple of Artemis. I am in the Greek city of Ephesus, on the west coast of what is now Turkey. The temple is made entirely of marble, except for its tile-covered wooden roof. It was made by the architect Chersiphron and his son, Metagenes. It is dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis. It measures 115 by 55 metres. It has 106 columns about 12 metres high. It is the most incredible sight. Did you know that it was more than twice the size of the Parthenon? Pity it's not standing in modern times, it was destroyed by the Goths in 262AD.

Lots of Love,
Darren Wright
