The ankh was the hieroglyph for life. It was originally the strap of a sandal. Ancient Egyptians kept this as a lucky charm to protect themselves from illness, accidents and any kind of danger or evil. It was usually worn as an amulet. This charm was often put in the bandaging wrapping up a mummy.
