Anubis (Anpu) was the god of the mummification. His job was to guide people to Osiris and to weigh their hearts. He had the head of a jackal and the body of a man. He watched over the the mummification of the bodies. He was the patron of embalmers who wore jackal masks to carry out the funerary rites. There was a statue of Anubis in Tutankhamun’s tomb. Anubis carried an ankh, a sign meaning life. It was carried only by gods and kings, who had power over life and death. Anubis helped Isis to mummify Osiris’ body.
