AGENDA 21

We were invited to take part in a project based on discussions held at the 'Rio Earth Summit' in 1992, where, local authorities were invited to co-ordinate production of environmental strategies to be in place by the Year 2000.

Five priorities were highlighted by Newcastle's Environmental Forum

· Pollution

· Transport

· Waste and Recycling

· Energy Efficiency

· Nature Conservation

An event was organised to take place at the New Victoria Theatre, Newcastle, on November 8th.

Schools were invited to become involved in the production by performing or being involved with the publicity.

Mrs Cowley, the Year 4 class teacher, decided the Hugo Meynell would perform a play on conservation as the school has developed its grounds into a number of conservation areas.

A gentleman called Mr. Keith Morris came out from the Newcastle Countryside Project to talk to the children about conservation and to look at the school's developments with the children. A very informative afternoon was had by all concerned.

Ms. Sue Moffat then came from the New Victoria Theatre to work with children on their performance again a very informative activity which linked well with requirements of the Literacy Hour 'Writing a Play script' and performing in front of an audience.

When the class had finalised their script it was sent to the New Victoria Theatre for approval. Costumes then had to be made and props, every child was involved.

The end result of all these activities was a 15 minute play which raised issues on destruction of habitats for new developments and the need to conserve our habitats and wildlife.

The children performed the play in an incredible professional way infront an audience of 500 after only one rehearsal on that day in the theatre.

Four other schools, two high schools and two year 6 classes from local primary schools also performed plays other aspects from the list above. This gave everyone present a tremendous insight into the issues concerning caring for our local area and globally. The whole day was entitled

THINK GLOBAL ACT LOCAL!

The scene is set, a woodland, a hedgerow, a pond and a quarry.
The construction company blast for road stone and disturb all the animals in the area.
The woodland and hedgerow are cut down destroying animals homes, no where to shelter, reproduce or feed. The animals are moved to protected conservation areas.
The news comes that a pond is to be filled in. What will happen to the animals?
We will protest and all shout to save our planet.
Waiting for the final performance was a nerve wracking experience as you can see from our faces. Aren't the masks great!
Even in our dinner break the newspapers were taking photos - Charlotte an otter, Stephanie Corbett a rabbit and Amy Wilcock a Yellow Hammer all posed for a photograph.
