ATHENA Athena, or Athene (Roman name, Minerva) was the warrior goddess of war who wore a helmet and carried a shield and spear. She was one of the twelve Olympians, patron goddess of Athens and also the goddess of wisdom. She created the olive tree and gave this most useful of gifts to the Greeks. She was born in a most unusual way. Zeus complained of a terrible headache. Hephaestus, the blacksmith god, got so tired of his moaning he split Zeus' head open with his axe and out popped a fully grown Athena. |
