PAN

Pan was a god of the countryside, the woods, fields and fertility. He was the son of Hermes and a nymph. Part goat (like a satyr), with hoofs and horns, he was also protector of shepherds and goatherds. He was a wonderful musician who in invented the syrinx or panpipes. He played the pipes to woo the woodland nymphs but they always rejected him because of his ugliness. He was seen as lazy and often drunk.
