Geryon Slain by Heracles

Yesterday Heracles returned to Tiryns from the far west after successfully completing his tenth labour, which was to fetch the beautiful red cattle of Geryon without asking and without paying for them. The hard thing was that Geryon was a giant with three heads, six hands and six legs. Geryon also had a two-headed dog called Orthrus that helped him guard his cattle. Heracles proved too much of a match for them both!

Heracles told us what happened. He said that he killed the hound by shooting his arrows, tipped with the poisonous blood of the Hydra, into each of the dog’s necks. His master heard the commotion going on and the giant came rushing to see what was going on.

"I could see that wrestling the monster would be useless so I quickly fired three of my deadly arrows into the giant’s three necks," Heracles told us. "That was an end to him!"

Heracles then had the long cattle-drive back to Tiryns and his master, King Eurystheus. The king was glad to see him for once! He is now the proud owner of these fine beasts - but don’t expect him to be lenient on Heracles when he announces his next task!
