Heracles Captures Hind

Yesterday Heracles captured the Cerynean Hind. It is the second labour, set by King Eurystheus, that the hero has completed. He had been stalking it for a whole year.

The deer, sacred to Artemis the goddess of hunting, has got hooves of bronze and horns of gold. It has got the most beautiful fur coat and is fast and supple. This is why it took Heracles a year to catch it. Because he had to capture not kill the animal Heracles shot it through the feet to bring it down without killing it.

Many times Heracles came close but the Ceryneian Hind was too fast for him to be able to catch it. "The stag was very timid," Heracles told us. "Often I thought I had the animal but it always escaped if I got too close. In the end shooting it in the hoof was the only way I could think of stopping it."

The Cerynian Hind

King Eurystheus said that he was very surprised that Heracles had caught the Cerynean Hind. "Heracles is completing these tasks too easily. I will have to think of something a little more difficult next time."
