Heracles Cleans-Up!

Yesterday Heracles returned to Tiryns having completed his fifth labour. He had to clean out the stables of King Augeias of Elis in one day. These stables are infamous for their filth. It seemed an impossible task. So, how did Heracles do it?

Heracles told us, "When I arrived at these horrendous stables I despaired. The poor cattle were wading in muck up to their bellies. Cleaning these would take a lifetime I thought. Then the goddess Athene came to me and told me what to do."

Apparently, she whispered in his ear, "Water, Heracles, water". He went to a nearby river and dug a channel diverting the river through the stables. The water washed out all the dung.

Eurystheus shows his displeasure

King Eurystheus was annoyed and suprised when he heard Heracles had completed his labour. "I will have to think of a harder task next time," he said.
