Heracles Captures Crazy Cretan Bull

Yesterday Heracles returned to King Eurystheus having finished his seventh labour. His task was to capture the crazy Cretan bull. Heracles had to travel to the Greek island of Crete. He had to capture the bull that was terrorising all of the people of Crete, killing and maiming many of them.

They say that the bull rampaged all over the island because years ago King Minos had tried to trick the god of the sea, Poseidon. He had promised to sacrifice the fine animal to the god but the king used another bull instead. Poseidon was not tricked and he drove the great white bull mad. Great destruction has occurred ever since - until the arrival of Heracles.

Heracles told us, "It got a bit tough at times but when the beast came charging at me I grabbed its horns and twisted them around so he couldn’t hurt me. I wrestled it to the ground and put a rope over its head. It struggled a lot but I got it under control in the end."

It took months to get back to King Eurystheus with the Cretan bull. When he saw our hero with the bull he was angry because he thought he was never coming back.

Heracles grapples with the Cretan bull

"King Eurystheus said to me before I started the seventh task that it was going to be very hard," said Heracles yesterday. "He was right! You should have seen the king’s face when I came back with that bull. He was furious and frightened stiff at the same time!"

Now it is on to labour number 8 - we wonder what surprises Eurystheus has in store this time.
