Odysseus Found!

Yesterday a wonderful thing occurred. It has just been revealed that Odysseus is not dead after all! He has spent the last seven years on Calypso’s island, Ortygia.

After the terrible shipwreck of seven years ago it seemed that Odysseus had perished along with his men but the goddess Athena it seems had not forsaken him. Our hero was washed up on the island of the nymph Calypso, the daughter of Thetis.

Although Odysseus has lived well these past years he has in fact been a prisoner. Calypso has kept him on the island because she loves him very much and wouldn’t let him go back home. The beautiful Calypso offered Odysseus immortality if he stayed with her forever  but he longed to return to Ithaca and the gods it seems have smiled on him.

Athena must have persuaded Zeus to have pity on Odysseus because Hermes, the messenger of the gods, was sent to Ortygia to speak with Calypso.

He commanded her, in the name of Zeus, to free Odysseus and the nymph had no choice but to obey.

The latest news we have is that Odysseus has left the island on a raft that he built himself, leaving the heart-broken Calypso behind. Now Odysseus is on his way home once more. Will our hero get home safely at last? Or will his enemy Poseidon send more storms to thwart Odysseus once he hears that he has been freed? We shall see.
