Odysseus Escapes Ciccones

The glorious return of our hero, Odysseus, has been delayed. Half way back home Odysseus’s fleet sailed into a fierce storm, no doubt sent by his enemy, the god of the sea, Poseidon. Poseidon, it is thought, sided with Troy in the war with Greece and was probably angry because the Trojans were defeated thanks to Odysseus.

Odysseus forced his crew to throw all of the treasure looted from Troy into the sea as a gift for Poseidon. The plan worked! His ships survived to land near Smirna, the city of the Ciccones.

The Ciccones fought on the side of Troy in the war so Odysseus decided to attack Smirna. Odysseus was victorious once again, looting the city and leaving it in flames. He lost many men because the Ciccones were also very good fighters. Odysseus collected all of the gold and treasure and took it back to the ships.

The soldiers were extremely tired and hungry. A lot of the men complained, but  Odysseus told his men the Ciccones would attack so they had better keep on going, but they didn’t listen and rested anyway. In the early hours yesterday the Ciccones attacked.

The men were not prepared for battle. The Ciccones were winning the battle because they had a lot more men in their army, so Odysseus ordered the rest of his men to retreat to the boats.Odysseus sailed away from the island of the Ciccones, as fast as possible. Now he has fewer men but still enough to fight a few more battles and his ships are intact.
