Safe on Witch's Island

Great news! Odysseus and his men have been found safe and well after their escape from the Laestrygonians. They have been living for the past year on Aeaea, the island of the witch, Circe.

All was not well to begin with however. Circe is not known for her warm welcome. The beautiful enchantress turns unwanted visitors into pigs! When Odysseus’s men found her palace she seemed friendly, giving them food and drink. However, one touch of her wand and she turned them into pigs. Eurylochus, who had watched in hiding, ran back to tell Odysseus.

Odysseus was not happy. He set off to rescue his men. Zeus had sent his messenger Hermes to warn Odysseus of the danger he was in. He had to eat a special flower with the food Circe gave him. This would protect him. So he went to the palace and ate the food with the flower. Circe’s wand was powerless. This shocked the witch and Odysseus put a sword to her throat. He told her to turn his men back to normal and made her swear not to use her spells on him or his men again.

The witch, impressed by our hero, agreed to do this and has been looking after Odysseus and his men for a year now. But Odysseus is homesick and will, we have heard, soon begin his journey again.
