The Millennium

Sensory Garden

As a further development of the Hugo Meynell's extensive school grounds it was decided to develop a partially enclosed area near the buildings. One side has a single story wall which is visible from the dining room and a corridor. Onto this the number "2000" is to be fixed, using tiles that H.R. Johnson Ceramics International kindly donated. Every child or person involved with the school on 1st January, 2000 has drawn a symbol on a tile.

The area of ground in front of the wall is to have raised borders in the style of a Tudor garden, with plants that stimulate smell, touch and sight through scent, texture and appearance. On one side of the area there is a slope and this is to become a rockery with stones collected from Tarmac's quarries all over the British Isles plus a large number from Caldon Low. Tarmac has also kindly donated gravel for the base.

This project will be ongoing for some time. Watch it developing on this webpage.

October '99 - the gravel arrives from Tarmac's Cheadle Quarry. Mr Rice, who organised the donation, was there to oversee things.
Opening the back of the lorry to unload 10 tonnes of gravel.
Here it comes! Unloading the gravel for the base.
Mr Platt, a parent and a farmer, kindly brought his JCB to school during half term (October '99).
He levelled out all the gravel to form a good base for the garden.
April 2000 - Tarmac deliver limestone for our rockery. The stone came from Caldon Low and is mixed with aggregate.
Once again, Mr Rice was there to see the delivery he organised.
Another huge pile of rock (3 - 4 tonnes) for the development of the Millennium Garden is unloaded.
Children from Year 1 enjoyed watching the lorry unload - despite the rain!
