Wartime England

In October 1998 the Year 6 children in Mrs Batley's and Mrs Sillitto's classes went on a visit to the Heritage Centre at Hednesford to support their  topic on "Britain Since the 1930s". They wanted to find out about life in England during wartime (1939-45). As you can see from the pictures below they had a very good time.

Privates on parade! The children got to try on uniforms and hats. Note the wartime posters behind.
Notice anything different about the children? They heard the air-raid siren and put on their gas masks. Very pretty!
A typical 1940s house-wife measures out the rations. Things like butter, milk and eggs were in short supply.
Another shows the children how the washing was done (usually on a Monday). Note the typical 1940s kitchen.
The children got to handle and observe some artefacts from the 1940s.
They were particularly fascinated by the baby's gas mask. It was called a "Mickey Mouse".
Some of the class acted out a play wearing some 1940s style clothes.
Two of the children dressed as ARP (Air Raid Precaution) wardens.
Another ARP wardens drops in.They had to make sure all lights were out so that enemy pilots could not see the houses below.
