The Colosseum

Hi there! Here I am at the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. It was called the Colosseum because there was once a colossal statue of Nero, the emperor, nearby. It was built in the first century after Christ was born and was the greatest of the amphitheatres that were built by the Romans. It was enormous in size and had three tiers around the building. When it was built it held 45,000 people who watched gladiators and wild animals fight to their death. Emperors paid for expensive public games to help them be more popular.
