Easter Island

Hi there! Here I am on Easter Island, in the Pacific Ocean. It is about 1,500 miles from the nearest land. The island was originally inhabited by Polynesians and was annexed by Chile in 1888. It was formed by three extinct volcanoes. About 100 statues still stand on the slopes of the Rano Raraku volcano facing the sea. They are carved from tuff – a soft volcanic rock quarried from the creator of the Rano Rarako. The statues stand up to 40 feet high. They have huge heads with long ears and noses. The reasons why they were erected by the Polynesians is still a mystery to archaeologists.
