Christmas in Austria

"Frohe Weihnachten"

In Austria on the 6th of December the children give lists of the good deeds to St. Nicholas and a list of bad deeds to the devil who accompanies him. Good children are given sweets.

On Christmas Eve they have a feast of fish usually carp. Gifts placed under the tree are opened after this dinner. Some Austrian people make tree decorations out of beeswax. On Christmas Day the families have Goose stuffed and ready to burst with apples and chestnuts.  They sing carols like "Stille Nacht" (Silent Night ) and other well known Christmas songs. Carol singers go from house to house carrying blazing torches.
