"Merry Christmas"

For people in New Zealand Christmas comes in the middle of the summer. Many families still have the traditional roast turkey at midday. But they also go to the beach for a swim and maybe a picnic tea. In the evening people often gather in parks to sing carols by candlelight.

The shops are decorated with scenes from familiar countries like England, for example Father Christmas with his red cloak and white beard, snow scenes and Christmas trees. All this means Christmas to many whose parents or grandparents came out of Europe.
