Christmas in South Africa

"Geseende Kersfees"

You would rarely spend Christmas Day inside in South Africa. It is summer in December and, because of the hot weather, you would often eat Christmas dinner outside in your garden with your family and freinds. After lunch you would ask for and receive a "Christmas box" which usually has food inside.

After this you might go to the beach and put a Christmas tree up in the spot that you choose to sunbathe. On Boxing Day you would go to see your family to celebrate and have a chicken instead of a turkey. After you have eaten your meal you would have a bonfire to burn all the rotten plants so that new ones can grow.

There are eleven languages used in South Africa, so there are many different ways of being greeted at Christmas. For example, as well as the English "Merry Christmas", there is the Afrikaans "Geseende Kersfees" and the Zulu "Sinifisela Ukhisimusi Omehle".
