| Careers Education is
organised by the Head of Careers and supported by a team
of teachers and form tutors. In the Lower School aspects
of the world of work are covered during PSE, with
pupils encouraged to research work topics and discuss a
range of careers.
In Year 9 all pupils follow an Options
programme. This is designed to allow the pupils to
consider the suitability of courses which they may
choose. It also attempts to raise the awareness of
gender issues and job opportunities. During this
programme the pupils are encouraged to send for
information about a range of careers from the local
careers agency. A Careers Officer attends the relevant
parents' consultation evenings.
During Years 10 and 11 pupils have
timetabled Careers lessons as part of their studies.
They are encouraged to analyse their potential, research
various areas of interest, and undertake an interactive
computer programme which suggests twenty individual job
possibilities. The Careers department liaises with form
tutors to keep pupils informed about careers
conventions, exhibitions and open days at the local
colleges of further education.
Pupils are prepared for and take part
in Work Experience for a period of two weeks during Key
Stage 4.
Pupils are given the opportunity to
attend a mock interview with local businesses as well as
meet with the Careers Officer with their parents during
Year 11.
A significant number of our pupils
have always gone on to higher education, at
Universities and Colleges of Further and
Higher Education.
Those pupils who transfer to the local
sixth form colleges are given help and guidance as well
as the opportunity to attend information evenings.
The latest details of school leavers
are available in the appendices.
"As a result of very good
relationships all pupils have an adult to whom they can
turn, confident in the knowledge that any concern will
be dealt with effectively". Ofsted November 2004
