Praising pupil achievement is central to
motivating each individual to reach his/her potential.
This praise takes many forms, from words
of encouragement to written comments alongside the
assessment of pupils' work. Within the curriculum framework there is
a system of merit marks which lead to certificates of
credit. These are presented by the Head of Department.
Merit Marks are cumulative over the year
leading to the award of bronze, silver, gold, platinum,
sapphire and diamond certificates presented at special
assemblies.
Work of a particularly outstanding
nature from the individual concerned can be recommended
for a Head Master's Commendation to be presented in
Assembly. The pupil receiving the award is invited to the
Head's Study for individual praise. Pupils of all
abilities have received such rewards.
Each year nominations are pledged by
departments for effort and attainment and in each year
group, for each subject, two awards are presented at a
special 'Awards Evening'. This event is a celebration with an audience of
Governors, staff and parents.
Year 11 are invited back when their
results are known to receive their external certificates
at a special evening in November.
