Description
PEARL (Practical Experimentation by Accessible Remote Learning), an EU Fifth Framework funded project, will research and develop a system to enable students to conduct real-world experiments as an extension of computer based learning (CBL) and distance learning systems. The objectives are to give high quality learning experiences in science and engineering by bringing the teaching laboratory to the students, giving flexibility in terms of time, location and special needs. Particular attention is being paid to the needs of disabled students who are under-represented in these subject areas. The project's user interface system will offer full control to single and double switch users and have audio or video interfaces. This will mean that full interaction with the system will be available to most disabled students or tutors. PEARL is managed by the Open University and has a widespread representation of EU countries in its consortium. The ACE Centre has been invited to sit on PEARL’s advisory panel with a special interest in evaluating the alternative access interfacing (in particular, switch and keyboard) provided for physically disabled students wishing to participate in one of the distance learning courses.
