SoundsWrite V1.1 (Windows)

Soundswrite logoAs word processors become increasingly popular, many people are beginning to rely on a spellchecker to monitor their spellings. However, a spellchecker will only look for a misspelling and not for an incorrect usage. This new homophone checker looks out for homophones and indicates where one is being used. The writer can then examine the choice of possible spellings that can be shown and decide which one is appropriate.

English spelling is not easy at the best of times but homophones, groups of words that sound the same but differ in meaning and spelling, make life just that little bit trickier when something that sounds right may not have the meaning you intend. Most people are caught out by homophones at some time or other. The person who has never confused 'its' and 'it's' is rare indeed! However, for those with particular spelling difficulties, homophones represent yet another obstacle to overcome, since it is not just a question of learning the correct spelling, but also of recognising the specific situation where that spelling is appropriate.

Soundswrite being used with a word processor
SoundsWrite runs concurrently with any Windows based word processor and automatically checks for homophones during text input, alerting the writer to them as they occur. When a homophone is detected, a list of possible spellings appears on the screen - all the writer has to do is hit the function key corresponding to the correct word and its replacement is automatic. SoundsWrite is supplied with a comprehensive dictionary of homophones that can be edited or added to as and when required to suit the needs of the writer.

Hotkeys
For those who are faster at writing and who need help less frequently, having a list of spellings pop up every time a homophone is typed - correctly or not - slows down the process of text input. A Hotkey setting allows for a more fluent use by alerting the writer to a homophone by a bleep. If the writer is confident that the correct spelling has been used, typing can continue uninterrupted, but if there is uncertainty, pressing the Hotkey will reveal the spelling list.

Custom Word Lists
You can customise the homophone list to suit individual users. Some may only require help with a small selection of homophones and will not need the fully comprehensive list. Others may need support for near-homophones as well as traditional ones, in which case the list can be expanded. You can also add example phrases to each homophone to clarify their meanings.
