The Wooden Spoon Building
Information  |  Location  |  Staff Profiles  |  The Building
Why Wooden Spoon? Well, our new building is named in appreciation of the Wooden Spoon Society, the charity of British rugby, who donated £300,000 towards the appeal target. We're located in the grounds of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre so that we can maintain close links with other onsite rehabilitation units.

The frontage is deceptively small - the building extends back and down over two floors, with office and administration facilities on the first floor and the assessment, training and technical areas on the ground floor. Visitors benefit from washing and changing facilities, and there's a choice of canteens in the Nuffield Hospital on our doorstep, or a number of delicatessens in nearby Headington.

Our well-equipped and air-conditioned training room (left) is the focus for delegates attending ACE Centre training or Open Days. It's used for meetings, presentations, demonstrations and workshop sessions for up to thirty people, and additional smaller rooms can be utilised when larger numbers or separate sessions are necessary.

The assessment room (below, left) can be found in a quiet corner of the building. It's here that the young people work with our multidisciplinary team to find ways of improving their communication and computer access in school and at home. There's a small adjacent playroom where some of the younger children can relax during breaks in the assessment. Next door is the observation room (below, right) where parents and professionals concerned with the child meet to observe the assessment via dedicated video links with the assessment room. They can see clearly what the team and the child are doing, as well as what is happening on any computer screen that is being used. This allows them to discuss the assessment while it is happening, without disturbing the child.

Elsewhere in the building are audio-visual conferencing facilities that allow us to observe and assess children (or even carry out training) without you or us incurring travel costs and resources.

The building has been designed to be light and airy, and the large glass-walled atrium serves as a stairwell and staff meeting area, as well as providing ideal houseplant-growing conditions.

There's a friendly and informal atmosphere about the Centre at all times, and we can assure you that if you do visit us, you'll be given a warm welcome.
