Sign Language

These courses are validated by the Council for Communication with Deaf People (CACDP). Students need to complete Stage 1 before progressing to Stage 2 and then Stage 3. Success in the examinations (practical) leads to nationally recognised and sought after qualifications. The exam fees are not included in the course fees and are collected at the beginning of the second term.

Information Skills: 19/07A; Kate Gardner; Thu 19.00 to 21.00; 25/09/1997; 10 mtgs; WCT; £40.90 (-). An introduction to information skills in their broadest sense. Covering the use of libraries, reference books, journals, newspapers, and audio-visual aids. There will also be guidance on the use of more modern sources of information such as teletex, CD ROMS, and the Internet.

Assessment available. Open to all who wish to develop their information skills.

Lip Reading: 24/01A; June Whiting; Thu 19.00 to 21.00; 25/09/1997; 10 mtgs; WCT; £12.75. Practise and develop good communication skills; recognise speech movements and understand the limitations of lip reading; be aware of confusion caused by homophenous words; coping strategies; problem solving and sharing with other group members; improve memory and concentration powers; knowledge of various environmental aids; the hearing aid and how it works and the ear.

Lip Reading: 24/03A; Rosalyn Wilkes; Mon 10.30 to 12.30; 22/09/1997; 10 mtgs; WCT; £13.25. As well as lip-reading the class will learn how to pick up clues from such things as facial expression and body language. The class is small and informal and the tutor has personal experience of a hearing loss.

British Sign Language - Stage 1: 24/04A; David George; Mon 16.30 to 18.30; 22/09/1997; 36 mtgs; WCT; £60.00 (A). The course aims to give students the opportunity to acquire basic sign language skills. It also provides information about deaf people, deaf culture and the deaf community.

British Sign Language - Stage 1: 24/05A; David George; Mon 18.45 to 20.45; 22/09/1997; 36 mtgs; WCT; £60.00 (A). Provides information about deaf people, deaf culture and the deaf community and allows students to acquire basic signing skills.

British Sign Language - Stage 1: 24/06A; TBA; Mon 19.00 to 21.00; 22/09/1997; 36 mtgs; WCT; £60.00 (A).
British Sign Language - Stage 1: 24/07A; William Stavert; Tue 19.00 to 21.00; 23/09/1997; 36 mtgs; WCT; £60.00 (A).

British Sign Language - Stage 2 pt 2: 24/08A; Paul Mouzer and Amanda Cockle; Wed 18.30 to 21.00; 25/09/1997; 36 mtgs; WCT; £122.00 (A). This course is for students who have passed Stage 1 and who have had a minimum of 30 hours contact with the deaf community outside the course. Students who have not completed year 1 will be required to sign with the course tutors to assess their competence before joining the course. Students should note that video is used extensively and they will be filmed as part of the course. Success in the examination (practical) leads to a nationally recognised and sought after qualification.

British Sign Language - Stage 1: 24/09A; TBA; Mon 13.30 to 15.30; 22/09/1997; 36 mtgs; WCT; £60.00 (A).

British Sign Language - Stage 2 pt 1: 24/10A; Gilian Brewer and William Stavert; Thu 18.30 to 21.00; 25/09/1997; 36 mtgs; WCT; £122.00 (A). This course is for students who have passed Stage 1 and who wish to go on to Stage 2, but who do not have contact with the deaf community outside the course. Experienced signers may apply to join year 2 directly but will be required to attend an interview to assess their competence. Students would normally progress to the second year of the course to undertake the examination. Please note that video is used extensively and that they will be filmed as part of the course.

Sign Language Stage 3: 24/11A; TBA; Sat 9.30 to 16.30; 06/09/1997; 10 mtgs; WCT; £500.00 (£200.00). This is the highest level of examination available. Students will work in groups with a team of supporting tutors. Students should be aware that video will be used extensively. All course materials will be provided. Course topics:- home life, healthy living, social/recreational activities, education and training, employment, current affairs, consumer issues and daily living, deaf community and culture, functions of language, linguistics, variation in BSL. Entry is by interview ONLY. Students should have passed Stage 2 or be able to show evidence of extensive on-going contact with the deaf community.

British Sign Language - Resit: 24/15A; TBA; Wed 19.00 to 21.00; 24/09/1997; 12 mtgs; WCT; £45.00 (£0.00). For students who wish to resit the CACDP Stage 1 exam having previously completed a minimum of 60 hours study. The non-refundable exam fee is incorporated in the course fee - students will be entered in the first week. The exam will be in December.
