COMPUTING

A comprehensive range of practical computing courses to suit all needs. Students work at their own pace through a series of linked topics supported by a variety of reference materials and confidence building tasks. These topics build up into units of credit for which certification is available through the National Open Colleges Network. You can complete as many, or as few units as you require. When you join these course you obtain full access to the computers in the College Multi-Media centre which you can book to use most evenings and Saturday mornings. The College runs PC's with Windows 3.11 and the software packages in Microsoft Office and/or Works. We offer a range of Windows 95 conversion courses. Ask for details.

For people who want to gain a basic knowledge of computers - complete novices are welcome. Using windows with Microsoft works, the course covers word-processing, spreadsheets and databases as well as basic skills such as file organising and keyboard recognition.

A practical introduction to computing using Windows 3.11 and the software packages in Microsoft Office - including Word version 6, Access version 2 and Excel version 5. Complete beginners will start work as a group to master the basic controls, those with some experience will work at their own pace on a series of linked tasks to build their experience and knowledge. Students will be given the opportunity to work on their own projects with the tutor's support. Modular assessment available.

Computing - Microsoft Word/Works: 79/31A; Hilary Walker; Thu 19.00 to 21.15; 25/09/1997; 10 mtgs; WCT; £51.00 (-). A course for the novice word-processing user. The basics of using Microsoft Word or Works.
Saturday Computer Workshop: 79/09A; TBA; Sat 9.30 to 11.45; 27/09/1997; 10 mtgs; WCT; £51.00 (A). This course will run in the Multimedia Centre within the College Library. Students work at a personal computer linked to monochrome ink jet printers. All of the computers are loaded with Microsoft Office 4.2. This is a suite of software packages which includes the word processing package Word 6, the spreadsheet package Excel 5 and the database package Access 2. Some of the computers are running under Windows 3.11 and some with Windows 95. Students work at their own pace on individual assignments with the support of the supervising tutor. With this format the workshops are suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some knowledge. Assessment is available for those students who wish in the following areas:- Word Processing, Databases, Spreadsheets, Computer Art, Desktop Publishing, Graphical Representation of Data.

Desk Top Publishing: 79/01A; Bob Pullen; Wed 19.00 to 21.00; 01/10/1997; 10 mtgs; NWHS; £69.20 (-). This course is aimed at beginners or people with limited knowledge. One fingered typists can explore the potential of the computer as a design tool. each session will involve a demonstration and some hands on experience. Pagemaker 4.2, Freehand 3.1 are used on Apple Macintosh systems (its what you do with them that counts!), output is to laser printer. Finding your way around the Desk Top - file management - using the toolbox - handling text - page layout - creating logo, symbols and diagrams -using scanner and still video.

CorelDRAW 3.0 - A Foundation Course In Computer Graphics: 79/19A; Bill Alloway; Mon 19.00 to 21.00; 29/09/1997; 6 mtgs; WCT; £43.00 (-). For anyone with a basic familiarity with Microsoft Windows and one or two Windows applications who wants to develop skills in creating graphics for DTP and computer-based publishing generally. CorelDRAW is probably the best known graphics software of all and version 3.0 is more than powerful enough for most purposes while being available at a very reasonable cost.

At the end of this 2 day course you will be able to create a network using Windows for Workgroups and Windows 95 based machines. Course topics include:- Cabling with thin wire Ethernet and RJ45 Network Cards, Simple Hubs, Installing Network Hardware, Installing Windows for Workgroups Networking,Installing Windows 95 Networking,Installing Windows 95 Plug in and Play, Networking , Sharing,Windows for Workgroups Security, Windows 95 security, Basic Security and system planning issues. During this course you will build a small network from scratch, testing stage by stage, making the cables, installing the hardware and software and finally configuring and using your network. You will also receive a short manual describing all the details of the course. The course is not designed to make you an expert in networks, but would enable you to set up a working network covering 3 or 4 machines.

PROGRAMMING

Beginning To Program In C: 79/04A; TBA; Tue 18.30 to 20.30; 16/09/1997; 36 mtgs; WCT; £74.50 (A). A course designed for people who need to program in the "C" language. Suitable for the novice - programming experience in another high level language is not necessary. There is a registration fee of £35.65 for City & Guilds accreditation with this course.

An Introduction To Unix: 79/08A; Mike Jones; Thu 19.00 to 21.00; 18/09/1997; 11 mtgs: WCT; £63.00 (A). The College UNIX environment is provided by Linux, running the Bourne (Again) shell, hosted on an Ethernet network. There is a computer and printer for each candidate. Comprehensive documentation is provided throughout the course with aim of providing an interactive learning regime supported where necessary by formal lectures. Assessment is by course work. This introductory course leads on to two further Unix based courses with OCN NVQ level 3 accreditation.
TCP/IP: 79/35A; Mike Jones; Tue 19.00 to 21.00; 16/09/1997; 12 mtgs; WCT; £50.00 (A). A series of lectures, supported by course notes. Whenever possible, practical reinforcement of the major points is made immediately on individual UNIX based PC's.

Build Your Own PC: 79/07A; TBA; Tue 18.30 to 20.30; 23/09/1997; 8 mtgs; WCT; £35.03 (-). If you can handle a screwdriver, you can build your own state-of-the-art personal computer. Depending on the speed and power you want a machine will cost £500-£1500+.

You can access the Internet in the Multimedia Centre for £1.50 per 30 minutes. Our courses offer a wide range of training to use the Internet.
