This course offers the chance to read one of the longest and most difficult novels in the world, in translation, with the guidance of a tutor and with the opportunity to linger over the immensely rich portrayal of character, psychology, family life and class structure in Remembrance of Things Past. This knowledge will create the basis for choice of the most suitable forms in which participants can express themselves. Class exercises will give guided practice and positive and supportive criticism will be given, this being a very personal type of self-expression.

Short Story Writing: 32/35C; Dr David Ryder; Fri 13.00 to 15.00; 26/09/1997; 10 mtgs; WCT; £40.90 (-). Participants will receive guidance and will practice, using group and pair work, the important aspects of short story writing: naming and describing characters, and giving them backgrounds; creating limited situations and developing plot; and giving a story a narrative view or angle. Work in progress can be discussed and guidance will be given about suitable publications for submission of work.
