We offer a full range of classroom-based course validated by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). The exam fees are not included in the course fees and are collected during the first term. Holders of the shore-based certificates may go on to take the RYA practical course and examination.

This classroom-based course provides the knowledge of boat management, pilotage, seamanship, navigation and meteorology which is necessary for you to skipper a boat on any passage which can be completed without the use of astronavigation. This course is for people who have completed the Coastal Skipper/Watch Leader Certificate or who have considerable cruising experience. Holders of this shore-based certificate may go on to take the RYA practical examination to gain a Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence (Sail Cruising) or Certificate of Competence (Motor Cruising).

This classroom-based course provides the knowledge of boat management, pilotage, seamanship, navigation and meteorology which is necessary for you to skipper a boat on short coastal passages in daylight. No previous knowledge is assumed. Holders of this shore-based certificate may go on to take a practical course and the RYA practical examination to gain a Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence (Sail Cruising) or Certificate of Competence (Motor Cruising).

RYA Ocean Yachtmaster: 78/04A; Karle Stephenson; Thu 19.00 to 21.30; 25/09/1997; 22 mtgs; WCT; £113.30 (A). A course in astronavigation and worldwide meteorology. It assumes a knowledge of the subjects covered in the other shorebased courses.

Navigational and Instrumentation Practice: 78/09A; Karle Stephenson; Sat 9.30 to 16.00; 04/10/1997; 4 mtgs; WCT; £60.00 (A). For coastal and ocean yachtsmen (or those who aspire to be sailors!). This programme links the ancient navigational skills of the mariner with the modern electronic aids by means of which position at sea can be determined.
The course is in 2 parts, extending over 8 Saturdays, 4 in October and November - course ref 78/09A and 4 in the Spring of '98 - course ref 78/30A. It is expected that Open College certification will be available to people completing both parts of the course.
Fee for each part is £60.00, or £105.00 if both parts are paid together.
RYA Diesel Engines: 78/12A; Matt Ball; Mon 19.00 to 21.00; 10/11/1997; 3 mtgs; WCT; £30.00 (-). Learn the basics of diesel engine maintenance and how to avoid mechanical failure at sea. No mechanical aptitude or prior experience required - most checks and adjustments are simple and straightforward.

This classroom - based course provides the knowledge of boat management, pilotage, seamanship, navigation and meteorology which is necessary for you to skipper a boat on any passage which can be completed without the use of astronavigation. This course if for people who have completed the Coastal Skipper/Watch Leader Certificate or who have considerable cruising experience. Holders of this shore - based certificate may go on to take the RYA practical examination to gain a Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate (Sail Cruising) or Certificate of Competence (Motor Cruising). This course will also include GMDSS VHF and first aid RYA course.
The Complete Ocean Yachtmaster: 78/33A; Karle Stephenson; Thu 18.30 to 21.30; 25/09/1997; 22 mtgs; WCT; £130.00 (£60.00). A course in astro - navigation and worldwide meteorology. It assumes a knowledge of the subjects covered in the other shorebased courses plus Long Range Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.
