Curry Houses in Abingdon.

At the time of writing this the latest update to this page (Early-October 2002) Abingdon now has 5 Indian restaurants and numerous Indian takeaways most of which are listed below and as I write yet more are planned !

Please Note: The following is purely the site authors view and may well differ from that of the reader. Should you wish to form your own opinion please visit the restaurants mentioned.

The Dil Raj Restaurant. 6 Ock Street. 01235 553305.
A sizeable establishment with a frontage that hides the real depth and size of this restaurant, based opposite the old chapel in the 'The Square' (not to be confused with the 'Market Place') in the building that used to house 'Holmes' the Bakers some years ago.
A quite enormous menu and reportoire, which always delivers unfaltering perfection with every visit. By far the best chutney dish in town with five excellent flavours available. Main course dishes range from one end of the heat scale to the other but in a way that never sacrifices the flavour at all and should there be something you want that is'nt on the menu then (within reason) just ask.
The staff are always very polite, service is always prompt and should you become a regular you will be accepted as part of the Dil Raj family and thus a whole new world of delights will become available to you. Draught beers include Tetley and Lal-Toofan with Bangla available bottled as well.
This is is by far the best Indian restaurant in Abingdon.

Al-zaib, Indian khana. 46 Stert Street. 01235 526747.
Located in a recently converted public house (July '02) mid way along Stert Street, this brand new curry house invites you to sample 'The Beauty of Indian Food'.
A less inspiring chutney dish with four flavours available.
Big helpings are the order of the day here with excellent flavour and taste.
The bill too is a pleasant suprise being one of the lowest in the town for an average meal.
Bottled beers include both Cobra and Bangla making this house unique in Abingdon ! although the single draught beer is a bit of a let down (Heineken) although i'm sure this will improve as the restaurant is still very new.
Very Good !

Spice Valley. 21-27 Ock Street, Tannery Court (Rear of Coxeters House). 01235 539400
Located in the rear of what used to be part of Coxeter's department store on Stratton Way, this restaurant was until recently one of the newest establishments in the town.
It is able to deliver exquisite flavoursome curries in keeping with it's spicy title.
The Coxeter's location means a massive seating area (possibly still not as many tables as the Dil Raj though), which always seems partially empty even when lots of people are seated.
Lighting : it is very bright ! perhaps giving away the previous use of this restaurant as a shop.
Main plus points are firstly the bill as this Indian costs less to eat in than all but one of the others in the locality, also the level of service is first rate, ultra-polite waiters and rapid delivery of orders, what more can you ask for.
This restaurant seems to have a roaring takeaway trade which is perhaps where is makes it's main money.

House of Spice/The Prince of India. 10 Ock Street. 01235 532856.
The Oldest Indian establishment in the town and also the most traditional.
Located just two doors down from the Dil Raj in Ock Street next to the turning for Winsmore Lane.
All the usual dishes served in the usual Indian style, rather pokey and yet warm/cozy surroundings compared to a couple of the above (Dil-Raj and Spice Valley) and the lighting is more traditional and therefore subdued than it's more 'Spicy' competition also mentioned above which in this case is a definite plus !.
Prices are aligned towards it's near neighbour (the Dil Raj).
Quality is good but unfortunately not that good.

Assam Balti Restaurant. 5-7 Bath Street. 01235 537786.
Not the cheapest, not the largest and not the best in my opinion, but nevertheless always available Assam's is always an alternative to the usual Abingdon Curry being situated between the 'Blue Boar' and 'Black Swan' public houses, ideal for those night's when its tipping it down with rain.
Pricing is similar to the Dil Raj and Prince of India.
My personal view is that although this restaurant is good it is not as good as the other competition in the town.
