Curriculum The curriculum is broadly based so that your child will receive a well-balanced education. The National Curriculum is part of this whole curriculum. ENGLISH Through the teaching of English the school aims to extend the children's existing knowledge of language by providing a variety of stimulating experiences. There are three main areas concerned with the teaching of and learning about language; 1.Speaking and Listening. We aim to provide children with the opportunity to express their ideas and observations through discussions with adults and each other. Our school aims to encourage the skill of listening, both to adults and each other, in order to learn. We hope to foster and develop a wide range of speaking and listening skills through drama and role play. 2.Reading. We aim to promote a love of books of all types and to stimulate children's interest in books so that this remains with them for the rest of their life. This is achieved by shared reading of books which are taken home and by pairing older and younger so that they share books together. The children also read with their teacher, classroom assistants and voluntary helpers. They read in a variety of contexts at school. Children are expected to become increasingly independent in their selection of books and ability to use reference materials in the school library. Children are encouraged to read both for pleasure and information. When books are taken home it is hoped that parents will share the book and read with their child. Meetings are held with the staff to help parents with this and a booklet is available to help guide parents with our approach. 3.Writing. We aim to encourage each child to develop a comfortable, speedy, legible handwriting style for written communication. To this end conventional ways of forming letter shapes are taught and practised in a flowing, joined style. Writing activities are taught in such a way as to present children with a variety of experiences and to promote the development of writing skills. The children's own developmental writing skills is also encouraged. MATHEMATICS We aim to present Mathematics in an interesting and stimulating way to ensure the children have confidence in their capabilities.Mathematics is taught using the Heinemann Mathematics scheme. In additon to this there are a great deal of investigations and practical activities that often span the whole curriculum so that the children are using their maths in a variety of contexts. Calculators and computers are an integral part of this and are used in all classrooms. The National Curriculum requires the children to cover the following; Using and applying Mathematics, Number, Algebra, Shape space and data handling. SCIENCE Science is concerned with encouraging children to observe, investigate and better understand the world in which we live. Our aim therefore is to help the children develop enquiring minds and a scientific approach to solving problems in a manner appropriate to their age or ability. The children work through a series of activities which stimulate them to observe carefully, develop curiosity, question, and devise simple investigations to examine and explore ideas. They are encouraged to record their findings clearly and accurately using drawing, language and mathematical skills. The following subjects are also covered in the school's curriculum.
