Letter to Year 2 parents

September 1999

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Year 2. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting year. Mrs Cook is being supported by Mrs Walker and Miss Maughan-Strickler is supported by Mrs McLeod. Mrs Walker will also be supporting Miss Maughan-Strickler when Mrs McLeod helps Mrs Westerby in the office. Our topic this term is Holes and Habitats and we have planned an exciting beginning by visiting Beaulieu Study Centre on Tuesday 28 September. A letter about the visit has already been sent home. If you did not receive one please inform your child’s class teacher.

The children are encouraged to organise their own time when not working with an adult or the whole class. They use their planning books for this and have designated sessions of independent learning during the week. Each of these sessions begins with the teacher showing the children a particular skill and then an adult will work with children who chose to practise this skill during the session. It is expected that the children will follow at least one of the shown skills each week. The children having made a written plan have to review their work when completed. All the children are involved in a daily Reading and Writing hour and mental maths sessions. They also have three maths sessions.

We have lots of exciting things planned around the topic of ‘Hole and Habitats’. We aim to cover:

English

drafting an imaginary story and making it into a book

writing poems, lists, descriptions, notes, messages etc.

watching a language based programme called ‘Badger Girl’

practising phonic and rhyming skills and joined handwriting

reading group books using decoding skills

finding out about animals and habitats using non-fiction books

Maths

solving number problems mentally

using number bonds, patterns and 100 square

addition and subtraction skills

2D and 3D shapes

using money equivalents

estimating and measuring length

units of time, minutes, hours, days etc

data handling

explain how they reached the answer

Science

animal homes and habitats

hibernation

living and non-living things

minibeasts

properties of sound

cooking (for Christmas)

ICT (Information Communication Technology)

changing font, size and colour using textease

saving and retrieving work

programming roamer

music maker programme

In addition we will be undertaking a variety of activities in the other National Curriculum subjects; PE, DT, Music, History, Geography, Art and RE. The children will work with paint, pastels, charcoal, collage etc.; design, build and evaluate their models.

Please can the children bring their PE bags into school on a Monday and keep them there all week. For PE activities all jewellery must be removed, including stud earrings and all long hair must tied back. Could you provide a soft scrunchy for your child to keep in their tray if they have long hair. We are changing books on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please can you encourage your child to change their book regularly. We will be writing half termly literacy targets in their message books and the termly sight words are displayed on the Year 2 Parent’s notice board which is situated in the corridor between the two Year 2 classes. In accordance with school policy we are introducing a homework diary. This will be detailed at the Information meeting on Tuesday 14 September

If you or any member of your family is able to come into school to support Reading and Writing hour, Maths sessions or for a longer period please come in and speak to Miss Cousins. Please feel free to come in and speak to the class teacher about anything concerning your child.

Yours sincerely

Karen Cook, Airasa Maughan-Strickler, Ishbel McLeod, Louise Walker
