Anson C.E. (A) Primary School

Anson School in the 1940's

Class 1 have found out about life and times in our school in the 1940's.

Anson School comprised of two classes, an approximate total of 50 to 60 pupils.  Miss Thorn taught the infants class and Miss Lockhead who was the headmistress taught the senior class.  Each row of desks from the front to the back of the class was for the different age groups.

Local children went home for lunch while pupils from outside the village sat in their class for sandwiches supervised by a teacher.  Everyone was entitled to a free drink of milk which was
delivered to school in a churn.

Memories include the school gathering by the wall to watch the American army convoys going by for weeks and weeks.  The
children would cheer the troops as they went by and they would throw back chocolate and sweets.

The main games played were hopscotch and skipping.  No ball games were allowed because of the windows.

Thanks to a kind Grandad for sharing his memories.
