These photographs were taken in Winter, when the sun was bright and the shadows dark. Taken on a Saturday market day they show how lively Tamworth is. The many historic sights reflect the long and varied history of the town.

council.gif (93776 bytes)The Council Offices, Marmion House, Lichfield Street.

moathou.gif (99960 bytes)The Moat House, a Tudor building in Lichfield Street. It is now a restaurant. Prince Charles was entertained here whilst his father, King James stayed at the castle in 1617.
river.gif (117874 bytes)Ladybridge is situated just after the rivers Anker and Tame merge. Beyond the bridge is Ladymeadow, a quiet peaceful reserve which also contains meadow plants.
artscen.gif (101979 bytes)Tamworth Arts Centre is in Lower Gungate. It was originally a theatre, where the famous Sarah Siddons performed. In 1870 it was converted to a chapel. In 1974 it became a theatre once again.

church.gif (146392 bytes)St.Editha's church in Church Street. The church was founded in about 963. The tower has a rare double staircase.

bandsta.gif (90986 bytes)The Castle Grounds, colourful all year round and so close to the town centre. Notice the Town Hall and Church in the background. Come here to eat your sandwiches, watch the world go by or on your way to the castle.
herring.gif (122520 bytes)The Herringbone Wall in the Castle Grounds. It is so called because of the pattern the stonework makes.
penny.gif (119569 bytes)The Tamworth Savings Bank, founded by Sir Robert Peel in 1823. It flourished until 1897. It is situated in Ladybank.
sirrobe.gif (209472 bytes)The statue of Sir Robert Peel standing in front of the window from which he made his 'Tamworth Manifesto' speech in 1834. The statue was erected in 1852.
townhal.gif (153363 bytes)The Town Hall, built with money from Thomas Guy in 1701. The butter market used to be held under its arches. Now part of the market surrounds it.
almshou.gif (137104 bytes)The Almshouses, which replaced those built by Thomas Guy and are still called Guy's almshouses. They were founded in 1678 for people who lived in the hamlets around Tamworth.
market.gif (107455 bytes)George Street with the busy and colourful market. The market is held on Saturdays and Tuesdays. A craft market is held near the church on Thursdays.
