Ideals and Future
The idea behind the formation of the United World Colleges is to create an island of learning. It is a place where young people from different cultures and countries can share ideas, opinions and learn from one another.

"We are brought up in certain cultures and so our views and ideas on some aspects of life and issues can become narrow-minded and limited. In this international community we have the opportunity to interact with people from many different backgrounds and thus broaden our way of thinking and dealing with different situations. We learn how to interact with people who have different norms and ideas. The relationships between students break down the barriers of cultural ignorance that is a major cause of inter-racial discontent in many parts of the world. Hearing about another culture from the people who have experienced it themselves gives us more understanding. Our prejudices are certainly reduced - if not eliminated."

Events such as National Evenings help students become more aware of their own identity and motivated to learn more about other cultures and countries. This is a positive attitude in a world where many people seem to forget where they come from lose their sense of identity. It is interesting to discover that people from different continents have a lot of cultural similarities in matters related to gender issues, religion, and even the economic way of life. Sharing their personal experience with others helps boost their confidence and pride.

We cannot create a universal culture as we all believe and value different things in life but we can appreciate and respect other cultures.

A rich curriculum which includes both academic work and community service in equal measure has the primary goal of creating a multi-talented person; a person who will fit well in the outside community."

"One has the opportunity to acquire new skills, discover one's talents and weaknesses and work on them. We will not be able to remember everything we learn in class, but the skills and virtues we acquire, like patience, tolerance and understanding, co-operation, self-discipline, generosity and diligence are things we will have for the rest of our lives. These are the things that can keep any community together and aid in development."

"In Social Service, for example, students learn how to take care of the aged, the sick and the disabled in society. This group of people is there in all communities, they need to be recognised, respected, taken care of, and made to feel comfortable. It does not take much, just a willing heart. As we work together we learn how to co-ordinate our activities, be responsible people, and work in a team."

"One may not be very academically gifted, but may have a talent in sports, art, or music, and this is not overlooked. Students are encouraged to develop these characteristics."

"The Atlantic College experience is unique and rewarding. The knowledge you gain is yours to use and apply in any community you live in."
