No previous knowledge of the subject is required. The course has a high element of practical work along with problem solving investigations. The work culminates in the Design Technology Project. This allows the student to apply the knowledge and techniques developed during the course in order to solve a problem of their choice.

At both Higher and Standard level this subject includes:

(a) Designers and the design cycle

(b) The responsibility of the designer – includes ergonomics and appropriate technology

(c) Materials, properties and processing techniques – classification of materials and testing their properties

(d) Production systems – methods and scales of production

(e) Processing and control systems – includes digital and analogue electronics

(f) Mechanism – levers, pulleys, gears and machines

(g) Microstructures – the structure of matter and how it affects material properties

In addition, the Higher Level offers options which include:

(h) Food technology

(i) Computer aided design and manufacturing

(j) Invention innovation and design
