Geography Department

Geography is offered at Atlantic College as a Group Three subject - Individuals and Societies, as part of the IB hexagon of six academic areas. It is a subject that is at the interface between humanities and the sciences;

it is a social science that examines human distribution and interaction with their environment. The subject plays a critical role in the development of international understanding and respect for different cultures.

Geography is offered at both Higher and Standard levels, with each course containing stimulating material that is relevant to today's society. The syllabi contain themes such as population, world food supply and development, drainage basins and their management, coasts, arid lands, ecosystems, settlements, productive activities, and many more.

Students are expected to develop a range of geographical skills, such as the ability to read and interpret maps, to manipulate and interpret data using quantitative techniques and to undertake geographical investigation.

Both courses offer an element of internal assessment as part of the course, with Higher level requiring fieldwork and investigative reports, and Standard Level pieces of coursework.

The subject has a good take up rate amongst students at the college and has proven to be popular and challenging to both students who have studied the subject before, and those for whom it is completely new.
