Services
The College believes that education should not be only academic but should involve the personal development of the individual as a whole. As a result, what happens outside the classroom is of equal importance to what happens inside it.

A particular emphasis is placed on the importance of Community Service with all students expected to become fully involved in one of the Services on offer and to make a commitment to it for the two years they are at the College.

"There are three ways of trying to capture the young. One is to preach at them - this is a hook without a worm. The second is to coerce them and to tell them 'you must volunteer' - that is of the devil. The third an appeal which never fails 'you are needed'."
- Kurt Hahn (co-founder of Atlantic College)

When new students arrive in September, they are given a brief introduction to each of the Services and are then expected to become involved in one of them, making a commitment to it for a minimum of two sessions per week over the two-year period. Most of these sessions are run on weekday afternoons, but where special demands need to be met, they could be organised for other time slots, such as evenings or weekends.
Great emphasis is placed on providing the students with the necessary skills to meet the demands of their Services. Wherever possible, students are prepared for qualifications offered by national institutions, such as RLSS, SLSA, BCU, CSLA, among others. All students are also expected to learn to swim and to gain the Red Cross Community First Aid certificate.
All members of staff are attached to a Service and are responsible for the successful functioning of the Service.

The following services are available:

  • The Rescue Services - the college provides lifeboat, coastguard and lifeguard emergency rescue cover for this part of South Wales coast and is part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Her Majesty's Coastguard national provision. More than 200 lives have been saved by the College rescue services. The Rescue Services are:

    Coastguards
    Inshore Lifeboats

    Lifeguards

  • The direct assistance of those in need or who are in some way disadvantaged. The college Social Service Unit and Extramural Centre provide the infrastructure to ensure an effective and responsive service both in the local community and to those further afield. A sentence about SES.
