Save Barnwell School
Update from the Action Committee

Following the Open Meeting in the School on Monday 6th September, which was well attended, we would like to keep you up to date on the situation regarding the Local Education Authority’s (LEA) proposed closure of the School. Since they announced this decision in March it has been overthrown twice, on technicalities, through the efforts of our local County Councillor Bob Seary, to whom we are most grateful for his unstinting efforts, advice and support.

The LEA issued a public notice of closure on September 6th, following which we have four weeks to write to the Schools’ Organisation Committee (SOC) with our objections. Councillor Seary and the Governors feel that we have some very strong arguments on our side to present to the SOC, but that the most influential way of presenting our case would be if all households in the village were to write in protest, thus showing a united front. So we earnestly ask that you would do that, for the sake of our School, future generations of Barnwell children and our village community as a whole.

It is a sad act that villages on the fringes of the County, like Barnwell, have over many years suffered from neglect by the local government in Northampton. We pay the same taxes as town and city dwellers but have few if any facilities,( no transport links, no doctor’s surgery, no library fro example and, if they have their way, soon no school either).

The loss of our school does not only affect the parents and children of the village it has a knock on effect on the whole community, discouraging young families from living here and thus changing the historic character of the village.

We do hope that you will feel that you can spare a few moments to write a one page letter, expressing your opposition to the proposed closure, and addressing it to:

The Secretary to the Schools’ Organisation Committee,
        C/o Mrs Sandra Turland,
        Northants County Council Education Services,
        P.O. Box No.216,
        8-10 The Lakes,
        Northampton. NN4 7DD

The governors would appreciate it if you would allow them to send cop ies of your letter to various committee members personally and to make this possible you can leave your unsealed letter at Barnwell Post Office, where we will see that it is photocopied before posting it on for you.

If you would like any further help before writing your letter then please contact Mrs. Pat Rutterford at Barnwell Post Office or Mrs Judith Cowan on (01832 ) 273 492 who can give you additional information.
