Modern Foreign Languages Department

We aim to make language learning a dynamic, positive and achievable part of the curriculum. Keystage 3 is the introduction and foundation for the learning of French or German, with the top sets in year 9 taking Spanish as a second foreign language.  Years 10 and 11 are guided through the GCSE course to success.

Topics covered in each year group

Year 7 Introduction of the language including greetings / numbers / alphabets / language for classroom use / colours / pets / family / time / hobbies / school.
Year 8 My bedroom / home / town / transport / the environment / daily routine / food / clothes / weather / illness.
Year 9 The past tense/ holidays + countries / Europe / activities / school extension / future plans / free time - sports / cinema / shops + prices / numbers over 100 / household jobs.
Year 10

SEG Modular GCSE course begins.

Module 1 - My World.

Module 2 - Holiday time - travel.

Year 11

Module 3 - Course work (holiday's) speaking + writing.

Module 4 - The young person in society.

Teachers:

Miss. Cowburn. Head of MFL

This is Miss. Cowburn's 3rd year at Bishop Barrington School and has been acting as Head of MFL since September 2001. 

Previous teaching practices include comprehensive schools at Boldon and Park View, Chester-le-Street. Miss. Cowburn achieved a B.A. Hon 2:1 degree in French at Nottingham University and further went on to continue her studies at Durham University where she gained a PGCE in MFL.

 In her spare time she enjoys running, fell walking, swimming, reading, the theatre, socialising and travel.

 

Mr. Rimbaud

Mr Rimbaud joined Bishop Barrington in September 2000. He has previously worked at St Leonard's RC Comprehensive School in Durham and Biddick School in Washington.

Mr Rimbaud achieved his academic qualification from Blaise Pascal University in France, where he obtained a MA in English. He also obtained his teaching qualifications at Durham University.

Mr Rimbaud hobbies include: walking, listening to jazz/rock music and playing the guitar.
