Our Experiments

In science we have been investigating changes in materials.

The Insulator Experiment.

We wrapped plastic bottles in different materials; plastic, paper, cotton wool and foil, but we left one with nothing around it. We filled them all with warm water of the same temperature.

We measured the temperature of the water every 5 minutes for 20 minutes using a stirring thermometers that never came out of the bottles. The water that remained the warmest, would be the best insulator had the best insulator wrapped around it.

The cotton wool and the plastic kept the water warmest. The temperatures for both were 31 degrees Celsius.

We found that the thicker the material, the better the insulation.

The Probe Experiment

We attached two temperature probes to the computer. One probe was in ice and one was in warm water. We timed it until the ice melted and the water cooled down.

We made a graph showing the ice melting and the water cooling. We predicted that the lines on the graph would meet at room temperature and we were right.
