Knowledge and Understanding of the World

In developing their knowledge and understanding

of the world children should learn to become familiar

with their local environment and be encouraged to

appreciate their own nursery, school, home and village.

As part of our policy to encourage the children to take an active interest in the environment, we will seek to provide the stimulation for this by:

  • operating a policy within the nursery which is flexible and enables us to go out to the local environment and also further a-field when this would be appropriate to the needs of the children.

  • encouraging an appreciation of the countryside e.g. 'keeping tidy', 'taking care of', 'looking after', etc.  This would go 'hand in hand' with the policy being encouraged within the nursery itself and indeed the school building and the school grounds.

  • fostering an awareness of dangers within the environment and helping towards and understanding of how to cope with these dangers e.g.

  1. road safety - the road safety officer will visit and share stories and information with children

  2. safety beside water.

  • encouraging an appreciation of the change in seasons and involving the children in a variety of activities to promote their understanding.

  • observing 'growing' things both inside the nursery and out-with the school confines.

Children should also learn to:

  • develop observation powers using senses

  • ask questions, experiment, design and make and solve problems

  • understand some properties of materials

  • understand routines and jobs of familiar people

  • become aware of everyday uses of technology and use these appropriately e.g. scissors, waterproof clothing, fridge, bicycle

  • be aware of daily time sequences and words used to measure time e.g. morning, afternoon, snack time, first, next

  • be aware of change and it's effect on them e.g. their own growth, changes in weather, trees, flowers etc.

  • care of living things e.g. plants, pets at home

  • be aware of feeling good and of the importance of hygiene, diet, exercise and personal safety

  • develop an appreciation of natural beauty and a sense of wonder about the world.
