Early Maths Skills

Maths is everywhere.  Young children use mathematics every day without any prompting.

  • We aim to encourage the development of early maths skills through play by ensuring that every area in the nursery provides opportunities for early maths skills to be learned and/or reinforced e.g. counting, sharing, sorting, matching, classifying, grading, measuring, estimating, speculating, sequencing, gaining experience in problem solving and one to one correspondence, pattern making, working with solid objects, flat shapes, colour etc.  Also identifying and using numbers up to 10 during play experiences and counting games.

  • These skills can be gained by children involving themselves in role play, water play, sand play, construction activities, snack preparation, aesthetic activities, jigsaws and games, observation and discussion activities and many manipulative tasks.

  • We also aim to help broaden the child's vocabulary and encourage the use of mathematical language when appropriate.
