Outdoor Area
An outdoor play area should provide a safe, hygienic and stimulating environment where children can experience a variety of activities encompassing the key curricular areas.
We will seek to provide this by:
ensuring there will always be at least one adult outdoors who will be observing and extending play
emphasising 'safe' play at all times
ensuring the area is kept clean, free of broken glass, stones etc.
raising parental awareness of the need to ensure children are protected from sun e.g. sun cream sunhats, sunglasses
ensuring the gate is kept closed at all times
raising children's awareness of the changing environment around the area as the year progresses
encouraging physical play in cooler weather using resources such as bikes, building blocks, trampoline and also working with smaller equipment to improve agility skills
allowing children in warm dry weather, to use resources from indoors which will form the basis for more static play, perhaps construction materials, sand or water, painting and drawing activities, books and materials to extend imaginative play so that current interests may be pursued.
encouraging 'wet weather' play to be 'topic' related rather than free play and of a more sensory nature or as a 'finding out' exercise.
allowing children some degree of choice as to whether they play outdoors or indoors and encouraging turn-taking when appropriate - so fostering a sense of fair play.
all children playing outdoors when appropriate.
Flexibility will be the key to the use and development of a successful outdoor area.
