Religious & Moral Education Policy |

|
1. Introduction "Religious education is concerned with the development of the understanding of religion as a significant area of human experience. It is also an aspect of personal growth enabling the individual to explore questions concerning the meaning of life and the value of the individual interpreted in relation to that which is beyond man". (S.O.E.D. Guidelines 5-14) "Moral Education is the process whereby a person develops responsible attitudes towards others and skills of moral judgement about what is considered right and wrong". (S.O.E.D. Guidelines 5-14) Rationale: Education is about the development of the person as a whole. Religion is an important area of human experience. Religious education is concerned with the spiritual growth of the pupil and the development of informed attitudes, beliefs and values. Historically, Christianity has formed the basis of Scottish society and the mores and ethos by which we live. Today there are many other beliefs and attitudes represented in Scotland, which combine to make Religious Education an exciting and interesting area of study. Open discussion of religious and moral issues should be encouraged and respect shown to all viewpoints. |
