THE CURRICULUM
Over the past ten years there have been a number of significant changes in education. These changes are evident at Booth Lower. The staff here have adjusted to new regulations with professionalism and dedication.
The Education Reform Act 1988 introduced the National Curriculum to schools. The Core subjects of this curriculum are English, Maths, Science and Information Communication Technology (ICT).
The Foundation subjects are Art, History, Geography, Design Technology, Music and Physical Education. Religious Education has always been a statutory requirement.
It has become a legal requirement for schools to administer Baseline Assessment during the first few weeks a child is in a Reception class. These are carried out in a friendly, non-threatening way and the child is unaware that they are being tested.
Standard Assessment Tasks are administered to every 7 year old child. These tests take place at the end of Year 2 and the results are passed to the Local Education Authority and Government.
National tests have also been designed for children in Years 3 and 4. At the moment these are non-statutory.
In 1998 the Literacy Hour became part of a child's entitlement and from September 1999 the Numeracy Hour will be part of the daily routine. These reforms have been introduced as part of the Governments drive to raise standards in Primary education.
At Booth Lower School our planned curriculum is broad and balanced. It ensures cohesion, progression and continuity. All children receive their entitlement in an environment which promotes the importance, the fun and the magic of learning. In the remainder of this section there is a brief synopsis of what we aim to provide in each of the curriculum areas.
