HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY (sometimes known as Topic) Over the five years spent at Booth Lower School the children will be given the opportunity to explore many topics. We give the children as many practical and first hand experiences as possible so that the knowledge and skills imparted are meaningful. In Reception the children find out about subjects such as Food, Trees and Ourselves. In Key Stage 1 the subjects range from The Coronation, Where we Live, The Victorians to finding out about another European country. In Key Stage 2 subjects range from Invaders and Settlers, The Greeks, Habitats to acquiring more knowledge about Northampton town and the local area. ART Young children, in our opinion, learn a great deal about our world through art activities. We offer the children experiences using a wide variety of medium, for example pencil, paint, materials and clay. As they work and discuss, aesthetic awareness and critical appreciation are two of the skills we aim to develop.
DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY The opportunity to create begins with junk modelling and educational construction kits and progresses to using finer materials after consideration has been given to a planned design. We offer this development to children by using a wide range of resources.
MUSIC Not only do we endeavour to develop in each child a love for singing and listening to music but we place emphasis on personal competence in playing. The school is well resourced with musical instruments, both tuned and untuned. A violin teacher from the County Music Service gives tuition at the school each Friday morning.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION Our two school halls are equipped with modern gymnastic apparatus appropriate to the children's age. Throughout the year activities ranging from games, athletics, movement, skipping, fitness and swimming are offered. During the Summer term children in Key Stage 2 have their weekly swimming lesson at Weston Favell Upper School.
