The life of the tropical rainforest touches us all. Every
time we drink coffee, eat chocolate, read a book or go for a drive we are
likely to be using something that began life in the rainforest.
Rainforests cover approximately 8% of the worlds land surface and contain
a huge variety of plant and animal life.
A 'typical' 4 square mile of rainforest contains up to 1,500 species
of flowering plants. The UK in total has only 1,443 different plant species.
The vegetation of the rainforest is arranged in layers. These layers
are not always discernible, but help us to understand the range of animal
and plant life.
The information in the trail booklet is based on these layers. The trail
focuses on different areas in our tropical house and after area 1 can
be done in any order.
