The Canterbury Urban Studies Centre was
founded in the early 1970's and moved to The Canterbury Centre in
the beautifully restored medieval church of St Alphege in 1983.
Now renamed The Canterbury Environment Centre, the building is
the base for activities and is also used in many other ways by
other sections of the local community.
The Centre exists to advance environmental education and action for sustainable living at levels in our city and its rural surroundings. Its aim is to promote environmental awareness, change and development, to co-ordinate the activities of individuals, community groups, local authorities and businesses in the activities of Local Agenda 21. This means encouraging current development to meet the needs and aspirations of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The centre runs a full programme of exhibitions and events for schools, visitors and the local community. It is a registered charity with a low level of funding and is dependent on its supporters in order to maintain the level and standard of service the community deserves.
