The Message

Look at a painting which can be used to explore Gabriel’s message to Mary, that she would give birth to Jesus.

"The Annunciation"
by Jan van Eyck

Luke 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel brought a message to Mary from God. Gabriel told her not to be afraid.

"God is going to bless you, Mary. You are going to have a very special baby boy and you will call Him Jesus."

Although Mary didn’t understand. she would do anything that God asked of her. She trusted Him completely.

How do we receive and send messages?

How do we feel when someone tells us good news and bad news?

Pretend that you are writing a letter to a friend to give them a message. You decide whether your message is good news or not.

Look carefully at the picture. Which part do you like the most, and why?

What do you think Mary is thinking?

Why do you think that Mary doesn’t look at Gabriel?

The lilies (in the foreground) are a symbol of purity. Find out what this means. Why do you think they are included in the painting?

Why do you think there is a dove in the painting, coming towards Mary?

Mary trusted God completely. What do you think this means?

Some extra activities

Listen to "Let it be to me" (on "Make Way for Christmas - The Gift" by Graham Kendrick), or look at the words of "The Magnificat" (ASB Evening Prayer), or look at Luke 1:46-55. How does Mary respond to Gabriel’s message?
